SKiLDbites.
SKiLDbites provides news and information
for development workers who work in infrastructure
organisations and support local third sector
groups.
SKiLD uses the term development workers as a
general title but relaises there are many
different people doing many different jobs. Work
might be offering general development support to
groups, or specialist help such as funding advice
or training. You might be called anything from a
small groups advisor or funding advice worker, to
a training officer or legal consultant.

Assertiveness for development workers
- 9 June 2009, London
This course gives development workers a
chance to learn key skills, including:
- saying no;
- setting boundaries;
- dealing with challenging situations and
- having more options to choose from.
This course will give participants the chance
to share their experiences with the
group.
Human rights and equality - 15 June
2009, Birmingham
Run in partnership with the National
Equality Partnership and the British Institue of
Human Rights (BIHR).
The third sector can play a key role in
ensuring that human rights are made real and
meaningful in society. It is becoming increasingly
important that we and the organisations we support
have a good understanding of human rights ideas,
language, law and practice.
Liberating Leadership - 15 &
16 June and 16 July 2009 Birmingham,
8 & 9 July and 20 August
2009, Birmingham Run in
partnership with Community Sector Coalition (CSC)
This new programme draws on the rich
experience of the third sector and aims to give
development workers the skills to enhance and
liberate leadership in the groups they work with.
Participants will be introduced to the
concepts of a new model of leadership which will
give the groups a stronger voice, improve their
effectiveness and help them to become more
efficient.

- define the difference between community and

- the skills you need to be a good manager;

Tools for development workers - 6

For people who have been supporting groups
for a while, and want some new ideas and
techniques. At the end of the day you will have a
stock pile of tools that are ready to use or be
adapted.
Equality impact assessments - 14 July

Equality impact assessments (EQIAs) are a
tool for finding out the potential impact of a
policy, function or service (or one which is
proposed).
EQIAs try to ensure that, as far as possible,
any negative consequences for a particular group,
sector of the community or staff of the public
body are identified and eliminated or
minimised.
Diversity - making it real - 29
July 2009, Birmingham Run in
partnership with the National Equality Partnership
This introductory session will help tackle
inequality and discrimination within their
organisation, and the organisations they
support.
Facilitation skills for development
workers - 6 August 2009, London
A course that will give you ideas on
how to improve your group facilitation skills
and encourage creative thinking, including:
- how to deal with challenging people;
- setting and agreeing aims and objectives;
- an introduction to group dynamics;
- capturing information, discussions and
decisions.
New perspectives for experienced
development workers - 11 August 2009,
London
This will provide development workers who
have been in post for some time with new
perspectives and ideas to continue their
professional development both from the course
materials and through peer support and
input.
Update on ACEVO (Association of
Chief Executives in Voluntary Organisations)
learning programme
Promoting effective asset management
- 8 & 9 June 2009 Liverpool, 23 & 24 June
2009 Plymouth
A new two day training programme for
advisors to frontline community groups about
management of buildings and other community
assets.
At the end of the course you will:
- be more knowledgable about the diversity of
legal and technical aspects of managing
community buildings and other community assets;
- be better able to advise and support
frontline groups; and
- receive the new Community Assests Matter
resource handbook.
Over the course of the two year programme the
training course will be delivered in each of the
English nine regions and is currently taking
bookings for Liverpool and Plymouth.
Community sector trading project
- Autumn 2009, 24 hour residential to be held at
the Royal Foundation of St Katherine,
London
Aimed at development workers this residential
and online course enables them to gain practical
skills by working alongside frontline third sector
organisations.
The first session will be residential, all
other sessions will be held online. A deposit of
£100 will be payable from all participants on
joining the action learning set. This will be
refundable on completion of the programme.

Cracking the Code
This is a bursary scheme for infrastructure
organisations to improve their governance based on
Good Governance: A Code for the Voluntary and
Community Sector. NCVO will provide up to
£500 to support providers with an income of less

Is the only benchmarking service focussed

Faith and volunteering in
England
Volunteering England held a briefing
day in Birmingham on Monday 11 May to launch
the report Volunteering and Faith
Communities in England and the Faith
and Volunteering grant programme.
The event was aimed at faith volunteering
groups, networks, volunteering infrastructure and
support organisations. Feedback from delegates was
very positive. Information from the day, including

Grant programme for youth action and
volunteering in faith based communities
From late May, Volunteering England will be
inviting applications for projects that will build
partnerships and demonstrate community building
through volunteering. This scheme will focus on
themes linked to faith communities, work with
young people, and joint initiatives between
volunteering infrastructure organisations and
faith communities.

Case study highlights Cornish good
practice in developing advice dervices
This publication, produced in
partnership with Citizens Advice and Cornwall
County Council, gives development workers
information about how grant funding local advice

Supporting offenders
programme
Three workshop events, delivered in
partnership with Clinks, on raising awareness
of the criminal jutice system, working with
offenders and volunteering with a criminal record
are being run for development workers and
volunteer centre
staff.
Empowering the Voluntary Sector
(EVS)
The partnership is continuing to deliver
advice and training on managing disputes with
the public sector until late 2011. The
partnership now consists of Compact Advocacy,
NAVCA and the Public Law Project. The first
line of contact for advice is Compact Advocacy on
020 7520 3161 or email evsadvice@ncvo-vol.org.uk. The
Compact Advocacy team will review any dispute with
a public body and provide support, if
organisations require legal advice to manage a
public law dispute they will be referred to the
the lawyers at the Public Law Project.
The high quality training programme delivered
by NAVCA is continuing across the country.
The price has increased to £40 for bookings via
the NAVCA website and bulk bookings have increased

Local Commissioning and Procurement
Unit (LCPU)
In partnership with the Learning and
Development team a learning resource to be used by
local infrastructure workers involved in
influencing commissioning is in a
developmental stage, with pilot and national
roll-out planned for late 2009/10. It is envisaged
that the resource will provide participants
with an increased understanding of what the eight
principles of 'intelligent' commissioning
mean in practice.
