National Indicators - definitions

For new LAAs, for the three years 2008-2011, the number of national indicators (NIs) has been radically reduced (from around 1200) originally to 198 and most recently to 188.

The definitions for the NIs are contained in the National Indicators for Local Authorities and Local Authority Partnerships: Handbook of Definitions. This document also relates each of the indicators to existing Public Service Agreements and the Government's Departmental Strategic Objectives.

Updates to certain NI definitions are contained in National Indicators for Local Authorities and Local Authority Partnerships: Updated National Indicator Definitions, published in February 2009.

The government has deleted 10 of the original 198 NIs - see the Audit Commission's Guidance on the National Indicator Set for details.

NI 199 (
Children and young people's satisfaction with parks and play areas) is currently being developed and will be added to the National Indicator Set in due course.

NAVCA believes that indicators 1-8 are of particular relevance to third sector infrastructure organisations.
These indicators are:

  • NI 1: Percentage of people who believe people from different backgrounds get on well together in their local area

In addition, all of the other indicators could have relevance for the local third sector in a particular area.
