Sport and the third sector - working together

Table tennis rackets

Third sector organisations have an interest in promoting health and wellbeing, tackling social exclusion and promoting community cohesion. Sports organisations can play a vital role in meeting these aims. However they are not always linked in with the wider third sector and its support structures. Therefore sports organisations may miss out on funding, information and networking opportunities. Equally, generalist third sector organisations and their members may use sport and physical activity to address wider aims but not be linked in with sports infrastructure and delivery systems.

Together third sector organisations and those involved in sport can generate synergy, share knowledge, skills, expertise and resources to improve their effectiveness and reach. All of this is vital if we are to provide more opportunities for people who face disadvantage and social exclusion to benefit from participation in sport.
