NAVCA and LGA agree to work together to strengthen communities

The Local Government Association and the National Association for Voluntary and Community Action have agreed to work together to strengthen local communities and produce proposals that will put substance to the ideas published in the local government white paper.

NAVCA and the LGA will develop practical measures to assist voluntary and community groups to play a fuller role in their local communities. Both organisations warmly welcomed the white paper.

Lord Sandy Bruce-Lockhart, chairman of the Local Government Association, said:
"The LGA proposed in the spring that more powers should be given to local residents and councillors to influence local services, and raise local problems and opportunities. We are therefore pleased that the government is proposing to do this by strengthening the role of local councillors who stand for election as local councillors because of their wish to fight for the communities they represent.

"Good councils and good councillors have been doing this for years. Putting the relationship between the councillor and residents on a formal footing will enshrine the ability of local people to help change the services they use for the better."

Kevin Curley, Chief Executive at NAVCA, said:
"NAVCA has argued vigorously for a stronger voice for communities and a greater role for local voluntary and community groups. We are delighted that the white paper endorses our approach. We now look forward to working with the LGA to develop practical approaches to community engagement and empowerment. It is essential that as part of this, local VCS groups - with their vast experience of what matters most to local people - are enabled to play a full role in shaping public services."
