NAVCA update

Talking to the Conservatives and effective neighbourhood engagement - message from Kevin Curley

I recently asked members to send me impact reports and other evidence of the value of infrastructure services for frontline groups. This evidence is needed to support our national conversations with the Conservatives, notably the Shadow Third Sector Minister Greg Clark. I also asked members to let me have examples of effective methods of community engagement to support a BASIS Round II bid NAVCA is making. I have had truly excellent responses to both requests. Thank you so much for helping NAVCA with both of these important pieces of work.

  • Gift Aid - he promised to look into extending gift aid to subscriptions to junior sports clubs
  • Charities and campaigning - "Charities should not feel constrained from biting the hand that feeds them. Whether they are funded by an organisation, a local authority or a national government, they should feel absolutely free to campaign against the policies of that authority or government. I want the Commissioner for the Compact, Sir Bert Massie, to consider how we can do more locally to ensure that local organisations can campaign with freedom on local issues."

'No recourse to public funds' rule and domestic violence

In 2002 the Government introduced the 'domestic violence rule' in immigration law, which states that if a person living with a settled partner can provide specific evidence to demonstrate that they are a victim of domestic violence, and meet other conditions, they can remain in the UK indefinitely. But for a significant number, the 'no recourse to public funds' requirement in immigration and welfare law prevents them from making use of the domestic violence rule because they cannot access safe housing or benefits to escape domestic violence. Southall Black Sisters, Amnesty International and Women's Resource Centre are campaigning for an end to the 'no recourse to public funds' rule. http://www.wrc.org.uk/policy/norecoursetext.htm
