London

STAN (Second Tier Advisors Network)

STAN is dedicated to supporting and informing second tier advisors in London. When STAN talks about advisors we mean anyone working with voluntary and community groups and helping them to develop. Some members have the job title of 'advisor', but some are called development workers, capacity builders, or organisational support workers.

STAN runs a programme of learning and networking events every six months, covering topics requested by the network membership. Past events have included fundraising, finance, social enterprise, and assessing need. Events take a variety of forms, from relaxed discussions and Open Space events to formal conferences and action learning.

STAN produces monthly e-bulletins and also sends out a quarterly printed 'Quick Read' publication. It also has a website with a log-in area for members where we keep shared resources and information.

STAN membership is on an individual basis, and falls into two categories:

  • full members give advice to organisations as the main part of their work,
  • friends are those who don't work as advisors (for example, grants officers or information workers).

Membership is currently free - but charges of £20 per member organisation and £30 per friend organisation will be introduced in the next few months.

STAN currently has 242 members and 97 friends from nearly every London borough.

The network is administered by London Voluntary Service Council.

InformLeeds
An informal e-network where you can ask questions and share knowledge about any aspect of capacity building or community development work with voluntary, community and faith sector groups in Leeds.
InformLeeds is for both funding advisers and development workers, as a lot of people's work crosses over into both areas. In particular, its purpose is to

  • share knowledge and information about funders, useful training or resources
  • share expertise and local knowledge about particular areas of specialist work
  • clarify our own areas of work and specialisms and find out where to refer groups to
  • find opportunities to work together better or shadow each other to improve skills
