Local government reorganisation

In 2009, local government was restructured in several parts of the country.

Five areas became countywide unitaries: Durham; Cornwall; Northumberland; Shropshire; Wiltshire.

The county area of Cheshire became two unitary authorities (East Cheshire and West Cheshire). The county area of Bedfordshire became two unitary authorities (Bedford and Central Bedfordshire).

More information on the restructure is available on IDeA's local government reorganisation pages.

Impact on the third sector

Clearly the reorganisation had an impact on the local third sector as the organisations they work with changed. Voluntary and Community Action South Bedfordshire produced a position paper on the changes in South and Mid Bedfordshire in March 2008.
