From values to action: growing allyship across the NAVCA network

January 29, 2026

Across our network, NAVCA members are already doing vital work to support communities, challenge inequality and create spaces where people can thrive. But in a context of widening inequality, growing polarisation and increased pressure on the VCSE sector, allyship in action is more important than ever.

Allyship is the practice of actively supporting and advocating for people and communities who experience marginalisation or exclusion. It means recognising where power sits, understanding how systems shape people’s experiences, and using our roles and influence to challenge inequity. Crucially, allyship is not a one-off activity or a badge to be earned. It is an ongoing commitment to learning, solidarity and action.

For local infrastructure organisations (LIOs), allyship is not abstract. NAVCA members sit at the heart of local VCSE ecosystems, with reach into around 165,000 charities and community groups across England. LIOs convene, connect, influence and support. That puts them in a powerful position to help ensure equity, equality, diversity and inclusion are embedded not just within your own organisations, but across local systems.

Following the success of our first cohort of Allyship Champions, we are delighted to be growing the NAVCA Allyship Programme. This 12-month programme brings together training, peer learning, facilitated networking and ongoing support to help members lead on allyship with confidence and consistency. It builds on what members are already doing well, while creating space to reflect, share challenges and strengthen practice together.

The programme is deliberately cohort-based, to create a safe space and a supportive network. Participants learn alongside peers from across the country, bringing different perspectives, lived experiences and local contexts. As one Allyship Champion reflected, “It’s really good to be part of a programme that includes colleagues from different parts of the country… knowing there’s a network of people who want to take positive steps on EEDI helps keep me going.”

As an Allyship Champion, you’ll take part in expert-led workshops exploring topics such as allyship, cultural intelligence, inclusive cultures and psychological safety, alongside facilitated peer sessions that create a trusted, supportive space to learn and grow. You’ll gain practical tools you can apply locally, access ongoing resources, and connect with a growing network of champions across the NAVCA membership.

The benefits extend beyond individuals. Investing in an Allyship Champion helps organisations build stronger inclusive cultures, share learning across teams, and demonstrate a visible commitment to EEDI with partners and communities. At a sector level, the programme strengthens collaboration, raises standards and helps ensure that responsibility for inclusion does not fall on marginalised voices alone.

As one participant put it, “It’s great not to feel like a lone voice.” At a time when leading on EEDI can feel isolating, the Allyship Programme offers a safe, practical and collective way forward.

The full programme costs £250, with an early bird rate of £200. We would love to see members from across the network involved.

Allyship is about showing up, learning together and using our influence well. If that resonates, we encourage you to join us. Download the Allyship Programme brochure now for more information.
