Helping the VCSE sector build confidence in AI through our Train the Trainer programme

Artificial intelligence is already changing the way organisations work, and the VCSE sector is no exception. But whilst interest in AI is growing rapidly, many smaller charities and community organisations still lack the confidence, knowledge and support needed to use these tools safely and effectively.
That’s why we partnered with Superhighways through the INCLUDE+ Fellowship to develop a new “AI Training for Trainers” programme designed specifically for local infrastructure organisations (LIOs) and the communities they support. INCLUDE+ is a network exploring how social and digital environments can be built, shaped and sustained to enable all people to thrive.
The project brought together six NAVCA members from across England in a collaborative co-design process. Together, they helped shape a practical, accessible training programme that enables non-specialist trainers to introduce small VCSE organisations to AI in a safe, ethical and useful way.
The focus throughout was on practical application. Participants highlighted everyday tasks where AI could support organisations, including drafting reports, creating social media content, writing standard email responses and improving communications. Importantly, the training also emphasised “learning by doing”, giving participants the opportunity to experiment with AI tools in real time and apply them directly to their own work.
Alongside practical skills, the programme explored some of the wider challenges surrounding AI adoption. Equity, diversity and inclusion were central themes throughout the co-design process, with participants reflecting on issues such as bias in AI-generated content. The training also addresses data protection, misinformation and the risks of relying uncritically on AI-generated outputs.
Feedback from the pilot sessions was overwhelmingly positive. 94% of attendees felt the course content was useful and pitched at the right level, while 90% said they felt confident applying their learning in future work. Participants also recognised the importance of developing internal AI policies and ensuring staff and volunteers understand both the opportunities and risks associated with AI use.
One of the clearest findings from the fellowship was the growing demand for trusted, sector-specific support. Many smaller organisations are already experimenting with AI informally, but often without the training or guidance needed to use it confidently. NAVCA members are uniquely placed to bridge this gap because of the trust and relationships they already hold within their communities.
The project also highlighted wider questions for the sector. As AI becomes more embedded in everyday working practices, organisations will need ongoing support to navigate issues around ethics, inclusion, capacity and sustainability. At the same time, LIOs themselves are exploring how AI might strengthen their own work and improve efficiency without compromising their core values. This is something we will continue exploring at NAVCA.
The training toolkit developed through the fellowship will be rolled out across the wider NAVCA membership over the coming months, helping more organisations build the confidence and skills needed to engage with AI responsibly and effectively.
We are running a training session on 2nd July, where attendees will receive the training themselves, alongside tips for onward delivery. You can book your place on the training, which costs £50, via the NAVCA Member Hub. The full toolkit will then be released free of charge on the Member Hub on 9th July.
