Equality and inclusion

Equity, equality, diversity and inclusion (EEDI) sit at the heart of what local infrastructure organisations (LIOs) do. Every day, LIOs work across systems and sectors, supporting VCSE organisations, connecting communities with decision-makers, and shaping more inclusive local places. That unique role brings both opportunity and responsibility: to model good practice internally, to share power thoughtfully, and to champion equity across everything LIOs do.

Across our network, NAVCA members are already doing vital work to support communities, challenge inequality and create spaces where people can thrive. But in a context of widening inequality, growing polarisation and increased pressure on the VCSE sector, allyship in action is more important than ever.

At NAVCA, social action and social justice sit at the heart of everything we do. Our members work every day with and for communities that are too often marginalised, unheard or excluded — and supporting that work means taking equity, equality, diversity and inclusion (EEDI) seriously.

Across England, many communities are feeling the effects of disconnection and isolation. Economic insecurity, the loss of shared spaces, polarisation online, and ongoing inequalities have created conditions in which hate is flourishing and extreme politics are taking hold. Local infrastructure organisations (LIOs) are seeing this first-hand: an increase in hate incidents, growing anxiety among staff and volunteers, and communities struggling to feel safe and connected. At a moment when cohesion feels fragile, the role of LIOs has never been more urgent.

Earlier this year, we launched our Allyship Programme – giving members the chance to explore equity, equality, diversity and inclusion through networking, training and online resources. NAVCA members volunteer to take part, and we support participants to feel equipped to take what they learn back into their organisations and communities.

In early 2024, NAVCA partnered with Cadent Gas to deliver the Centres for Warmth Fund – building on the existing network of warm spaces and community hubs across the country. Working through NAVCA members, the programme has invested in trusted local organisations to increase capacity, strengthen resilience, and connect communities with vital advice and resources.
